Coastal areas throughout the world have always been
some of the most popular destinations for tourists and recreationists. A
quick glance at many of the familiar tourist "hot spots"
(e.g., the Caribbean Islands, Florida, the French Riviera, Hawaii)
reveals a focus around the various amenities that beaches, coastal
landforms, and coastal resorts in these areas provide. As the coastal
population grows, so too does the need for additional facilities and
areas for coastal recreation, and hence the need to carry out studies of
the impacts and potential impacts that recreation and tourism activities
